Mothers Learning Week
Welcome to the Mothers Learning Week! This themed curriculum module honors mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and special maternal caregivers. Through non-standard hand-size measurements, tactile card crafting, expressive portraiture, verbal sharing circles, and physical partner coordination games, children will cultivate empathy and hand-eye coordination while showing appreciation for loved ones.
Designed as a five-day experience, each daily activity takes 15 to 30 minutes. You can easily insert these sessions into your morning meeting, literacy block, or transition periods.
MISSION BRIEF: WHAT IS THIS LEARNING WEEK?
The Mothers Learning Week is an enrichment pack designed to explore family roles, sensory design, and mutual trust. We embrace a diverse, inclusive definition of family, ensuring children can honor any maternal figure. We focus on safe, inclusive practices: comparing hand lengths, crafting texture cards, and leading partner trust walks.
TARGET AGE GROUP
This learning week is optimized for Ages 3–6 (Early Childhood). It contains simple adaptation guides to scale the challenge down for younger toddlers (Ages 2–3) or up for older pre-schoolers (Ages 5–7).
KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES
By completing this thematic unit, children will:
- Measurement & Comparison: Compare lengths and count using non-standard measurement units (paperclips).
- Tactile Artistry: Combine mixed materials (buttons, ribbon, lace) to make textured collages.
- Observational Drawing: Sketch realistic facial features, focusing on skin tones and smiles.
- Verbal Expression: Answer open-ended questions about family relationships to build language.
- Physical Responsibility: Direct and guide a partner safely, building physical empathy.
MATERIALS AND PREPARATION
Most of these activities use basic household recyclables and standard classroom supplies. Before starting, gather:
- A hand outline from a mother or guardian (or a standard large hand stencil)
- Paperclips, dried beans, or building blocks for measuring
- Heavy cardstock, safety scissors, glue sticks, and crayons
- Tactile craft scraps: yarn, colorful buttons, ribbons, lace, tissue paper
- Mirrors, skin-tone markers, and watercolor paints
- A soft scarf or fabric strip
HOW TO RUN THE DAILY ACTIVITIES
Follow this simple, step-by-step sequence over five consecutive days:
Day 1: Tracing & Measuring Caring Hands (Math & Measurement)
- Step 1: Have children trace their own hand onto a piece of paper.
- Step 2: Provide a pre-cut outline of an adult’s hand. Let them compare hand sizes.
- Step 3: Use paperclips to line up along the length of their middle finger down to the wrist.
- Step 4: Count paperclips together: “My hand is 4 paperclips long. Mom’s hand is 8 paperclips long!”
Day 2: The Tactile Card of Appreciation (Art & Textures)
- Step 1: Give each child folded cardstock. Cut out a large heart shape on the front.
- Step 2: Set out tactile scraps: soft yarn, lace trim, smooth buttons, and textured felt.
- Step 3: Instruct children to apply glue inside the heart and press down a variety of textures.
- Step 4: Enjoy this tactile exploration that builds fine motor precision and focus.
Day 3: A Portrait of My Caregiver (Art & Observation)
- Step 1: Look at photos of caregivers. Discuss details: hair colors, eye colors, smiles.
- Step 2: Give children mirrors to look at their own faces, comparing features.
- Step 3: Using markers or watercolors, children draw a portrait of their caregiver, starting with a head circle, then adding eyes, nose, hair, and clothing.
- Step 4: Help write her name or a title at the bottom.
Day 4: Caregiver Interview Circle (Language & Emotion)
- Step 1: Gather children in a cozy circle. Hold a toy microphone.
- Step 2: Interview each child: “What is your caregiver’s favorite thing to do? Why do you love her?”
- Step 3: Record their exact words on paper (e.g., “I love my mom because she gives me warm hugs and eats noodles with me.”).
- Step 4: Paste their interview text inside the tactile cards they created on Day 2.
Day 5: The Gentle Trust Walk (Physical Play & Empathy)
- Step 1: Pair children up. One child is “Caregiver,” the other is “Little Sprout.”
- Step 2: Instruct the “Little Sprout” to close their eyes (or wear a soft scarf blindfold).
- Step 3: The “Caregiver” holds their hand and guides them slowly, whispering: “Take one step up. Turn slowly.”
- Step 4: Swap roles, building deep empathy and gross motor control.
ADAPTATIONS AND EXTENSION ACTIVITIES
- For Ages 2–3: Let toddlers make painted handprints next to an adult’s handprint. Hold hands with a teacher on Day 5 instead of a peer.
- For Ages 5–7: Let children use a ruler to measure both handprints in inches or centimeters. Encourage children to write their own interview answers.
DAILY REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION PROMPTS
End each day with a 5-minute reflection circle:
- Day 1: How many paperclips did your hand measure? Was the adult’s hand longer?
- Day 2: Which craft item on your card was the softest? Which was the hardest?
- Day 3: What was the first part of the portrait you drew?
- Day 4: How do you help your caregiver at home?
- Day 5: Was it scary to walk with your eyes closed? How did your partner make you feel safe?
