Friends: Adventures of Superbuddy and Ms Emm (Book 9)
Friends is the wonderful ninth installment in our highly celebrated literature-based learning series, Adventures of Superbuddy and Ms Emm. In this warm and engaging story, Superbuddy is excited to play in the sandbox, but when a new friend wants to join in, he struggles with sharing his favorite yellow shovel and bucket. He feels a mix of possessiveness and frustration, unsure of how to welcome others into his play space without losing his own sense of fun.
Rather than stepping in to dictate rules or force sharing, his patient learning partner, Ms Emm, steps alongside Superbuddy. She models deep empathy and active listening, guiding him to recognize both his own feelings and those of his playmate. Together, they explore practical strategies for collaborative play, helping Superbuddy construct essential social-emotional skills and learn how to build strong, respectful friendships through active communication.
How to Use This Story
- What it is: An interactive, social-emotional learning (SEL) storybook session focusing on friendship, sharing, and collaborative play.
- Who it’s for: Ages 3–5 / 4–6.
- What children learn: Empathy, conflict resolution, active listening, sharing strategies, and collaborative communication.
- What you need: The Friends picture book, a sandbox or a large sensory bin filled with kinetic sand, several shovels, and buckets.
- How to run it:
- Before Reading: Gather children in a cozy circle and show them the cover. Ask them to share what they think makes someone a good friend and how we can show kindness.
- Read Aloud: Pause on key pages where characters experience conflicts or feel left out, inviting children to discuss their facial expressions and body language.
- Role-Play with Puppets: Use simple hand puppets to act out how to ask to join a game or how to share a toy using polite, warm phrases.
- Friendship Sandbox Build: Put children in pairs and ask them to build a single sandcastle together using a limited set of tools, practicing turn-taking and verbal collaboration.
What the Book is About
This story is a gentle and practical guide to social-emotional development in early childhood. It tackles the everyday challenges of sharing, boundary-setting, and peer interactions, framing them not as behavior problems to be corrected, but as rich opportunities for emotional growth and collaborative problem-solving.
Ms Emm represents the ideal educator and parent archetype—curious, patient, and non-authoritative. She does not impose sharing or shame Superbuddy for his protective instincts; instead, she helps him name his emotions, understand the perspective of his playmate, and co-create solutions. By doing so, she empowers children to take ownership of their social relationships and resolve peer conflicts independently.
Themes & Talking Points
Introduce these crucial social-emotional and communication concepts naturally as you read the story:
- Empathy & Perspective-Taking: Help children understand what it feels like to be on the outside of a game, encouraging them to look at their classmates’ expressions to see if they are happy, sad, or lonely.
- Practical Sharing Strategies: Introduce concrete sharing tools such as using a timer, trading toys of equal value, or finding a way to play with the same toy together.
- Using Your Words: Encourage children to express their boundaries and feelings verbally—such as saying “I am using this right now, but you can have it in two minutes”—rather than reacting physically.
- The Joy of Collaboration: Highlight how much bigger and more complex Superbuddy’s sandbox castle became once he combined his ideas and tools with his new friend.
Read-Aloud Questions
Use these open-ended prompts during your reading circle or group discussion to build emotional literacy and critical thinking:
