Night Sky: Adventures of Superbuddy and Ms. Emm (Book 2)
In Night Sky (Book 2), the second volume in our hands-on literature-based learning series, Superbuddy is looking out his bedroom window at bedtime. He notices that the moon seems to be changing its shape every night, and he wants to know who is cutting the moon or where the missing pieces go!
His trusted learning partner, Ms. Emm, uses this bedtime curiosity to launch an interactive bedtime inquiry. Together, they use a flashlight and an orange to simulate the moon, explore the science of shadows, and find out how the Earth, moon, and sun dance together in the dark.
How to Use This Story
- What it is: An interactive, astronomy-aligned storybook session exploring light, shadows, and lunar cycles.
- Who it’s for: Ages 4–6 / 5–7.
- What children learn: Moon phases, properties of light, shadow formation, and nocturnal cycles.
- What you need: The Night Sky picture book, a flashlight, and a small round object (like an orange or a ball).
- How to run it:
- Before Reading: Ask cover questions about the moon’s shape tonight to spark curiosity.
- Read Aloud: Pause during reading to talk about how light reflects off the moon.
- Active Simulation: In a darkened room, use a flashlight and a ball to simulate the Earth-moon-sun system.
- Shadow Puppets: Invite children to project hand or paper shadows onto a light-colored wall.
What the Book is About
This story is a gentle, reassuring exploration of the night sky, light, and shadows. Designed to ease common childhood fears of the dark, it reframes nighttime as a fascinating, active laboratory for scientific discovery.
Through patient questioning and simple physical models, Ms. Emm helps Superbuddy understand that the moon is always there, even when we can only see a sliver of it.
Themes & Talking Points
Bring astronomy and light science down to earth with these early childhood talking points:
- The Changing Moon (Phases): Talk about how the moon doesn’t actually change shape; instead, we see different amounts of sunlight reflecting off its surface as it orbits the Earth.
- Shadow Play: Explore how shadows are formed when an object blocks a source of light. Talk about how our shadows are long in the morning and short at noon.
- Nocturnal Animals: Discuss the animals that wake up and explore when we go to sleep, such as owls, bats, and fireflies.
- Light Sources: Differentiate between objects that make their own light (the sun, stars, flashlights) and objects that reflect light (the moon).
Read-Aloud Questions
Prompt curiosity and build oral language skills with these discussion-starters:
Before Reading
- “Look at the illustration of the moon. What shape is the moon in the sky tonight?”
- “What do you think makes the night sky dark, and what makes it bright?”
During Reading
- “Superbuddy thinks the moon is a giant cookie with bites taken out of it! What do you think is really happening?”
- “Ms. Emm is turning off the bedroom light to use a flashlight. What is she going to show Superbuddy?”
- “Look at the long shadow Superbuddy makes on his wall. How can he make his shadow grow even bigger?”
After Reading
- “Why is the dark nighttime just as important and exciting as the bright daytime?”
- “If we went outside tonight to look at the stars, what patterns or shapes would you try to find in the sky?”
