Preschool Five Senses Science Activities

The five senses are a young child’s ultimate tools for understanding and navigating the world. Exploring sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell is a wonderful way to foster scientific observation, neurological integration, and expressive communication. Senses-themed activities and lesson plans for Ages 3–5 and Ages 4–6 encourage children to pay close attention to environmental stimuli, categorize sensory data, and describe complex physical sensations with descriptive vocabulary.

At Superbuddy, we view sensory exploration as the foundation of early physics, biology, and mindfulness. Rather than presenting abstract anatomical lists, children engage in active sensory discovery. They play guessing games with sound boxes, paint with scented botanical dyes, touch varied textures blindfolded, and taste food varieties to identify sweet, sour, and salty properties. This hands-on, play-based approach builds scientific thinking and mindful self-awareness.

What’s Inside

Our five senses learning hub features a curated selection of low-prep, interactive sensory projects designed for classrooms and homes:

How Teachers & Parents Use This Hub

This hub makes sensory science highly interactive, connecting physical games with rich thematic children’s books:

  1. Introduce with Literature: Read our companion book Sounds to join Superbuddy on a sensory science walk, testing acoustic vibrations and whispering games with Ms Emm.
  2. Explore Taste and Smell: Read Food And Nutrition to study food textures, fresh produce aromas, and healthy eating practices during meal circle time.
  3. Investigate Vision & Pigments: Read Natural Colors to learn how garden leaves and flower petals make colors, then let children inspect colors under sunlight.
  4. Run a Mindful Movement Session: Set up our Yoga Quest. Help children close their eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on physical balance and muscle sensations.
