Preschool Feelings & Emotions SEL Activities
Emotional literacy is the cornerstone of early development. Helping children identify, voice, and regulate their feelings builds healthy self-awareness, deep empathy, and strong interpersonal bonds. Feelings and emotions activities for Ages 3–5 and Ages 4–6 offer non-judgmental, play-based ways for children to explore emotional states—such as joy, anger, sadness, and calm—and construct positive strategies for self-regulation.
At Superbuddy, we integrate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into every movement quest and story. Instead of abstract definitions, children use handheld mirrors to study their own facial expressions, make sensory glitter jars to model a busy mind, practice deep breathing during yoga poses, and play cooperative games that require reading peer body language. This active approach bridges cognitive emotional naming with concrete sensory-motor practices.
What’s Inside
Our feelings and emotions early learning hub contains a variety of engaging, low-prep SEL activities designed for classrooms or homes:
- Handheld Mirror Reflections: Prompting children to make “angry,” “excited,” or “calm” faces in a mirror to study facial muscle changes.
- Sensory Calming Jars: Creating liquid glitter jars to help children visualize how their minds settle as the glitter slowly floats to the bottom.
- Color-Coded Emotion Wheels: Drawing or pointing to colored sections (yellow for happy, blue for sad, red for angry) to express inner feelings.
- Dramatic Body-Language Play: Acting out silent scenarios for peers to guess the emotion based solely on gestures and posture.
How Teachers & Parents Use This Hub
This hub makes mindfulness and emotional literacy highly interactive, blending literature-based discussions with physical coordination:
- Introduce with Literature: Read our companion book Feelings Emotions. Discuss how Superbuddy moves from excitement to frustration when his blocks fall down, and what he does to feel better.
- Establish a Mindful Circle: Gather children and use emotion cards to run a quick morning check-in. Invite children to place their names on the color wheel that represents how they feel today.
- Run an Active Yoga Quest: Facilitate our mindful Yoga Quest. Practice balancing, deep breathing, and slow stretching to physically release tension and discover an inner sense of calm.
- Reflect with Collaborative Play: Set up our Board Game Quest. Encourage cooperative group work and turn-taking, which are vital for building positive peer relationships and empathy.
